NEW DELHI: The Congress had a massive win in all the three Hindi heartlands in the assembly polls.The Congress had promised during the poll campaign that if it wins, it would implement farmers’ loan waiver within 10 days of coming to power.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended all three ceremonies in Raipur, Bhopal and Jaipur. Some opposition leaders were all seen in attendance.
Soon after the victory, the Congress party announce a loan waiver for farmers in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
After Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh now Rajasthan has become third Congress state to wave-off loans after its victory over the ruling BJP in the Hindi heartland states.In these three states the Congress promised a waiver of crop loans of up to ₹2 lakh per farmer.
In Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Chief Ministers Kamal Nath and Bhupesh Baghel signed off on the waiver hours after taking oath on Monday. Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot waved off loans for farmers on Wednesday.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Monday waived off loans taken by farmers to the tune of Rs 2 lakh each within hours of taking the oath.
Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Bhagel, who too took charge on Monday, followed suit and announced his government will waive farm loans worth Rs 6,100 crore of around 1.66 million farmers.
Two days after taking oath, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot Wednesday announced waiver of short-term loans taken by farmers from cooperative banks and loans of up to Rs 2 lakh from other banks.
Since last year, waivers have been announced by several state governments, including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka and Rajasthan.
The last nationwide waiver was implemented by the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in 2008, ahead of the general elections a year later.
